In 1996, the U.S. President announced the Technology Literacy Challenge, envisioning a 21st century where all students would be technologically literate. The challenge is placed before the nation as a whole. The federal government's role is to provide the momentum to support state and local efforts to meet the challenge. Building on the available technology activities, the 5-year, US$2 billion Information Literacy Challenge Fund has been available for applications since 1997. The fund could spur states, local communities, and other involved parties to step forward, produce matching dollars and in kind contributions, and cooperate with one another in achieving the following 4 goals' - |

|
- To provide modern multimedia computers in all classrooms.
